Rain Barrel Program

Twice a year, Houston Public Works’ Water service line and its Green Building Resource Center co-host a Rain Barrel Sale. At these events, residents can purchase 50-gallon rain barrels at a municipal discounted price. The sales began in 2012, initially hosted by the Mayor’s Sustainability Office. In 2014, the Green Building Resource Center took over hosting the event activities, and in 2020, Houston Public Works began cohosting the event to leverage efforts and further incentivize the program. In 2021, Houston Public Works expanded the program to include subsidies (additional discounts) to rain barrels for Houston Water customers (when funding is available). Houston Public Works aims to make residential water harvesting more accessible and affordable.

Why use a rain barrel?

Rain barrels capture water from a roof and hold it for later use such as on lawns, gardens or indoor plants. Collecting roof runoff in rain barrels reduces the amount of water that flows from your property. It's a great way to conserve water and it's free water for use in your landscape.
