Geographical Information Systems

About:
Since the early 2000’s, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology has been utilized by Houston Public Works. GIS technology is a versatile tool that affords data driven solutions through the implementation of location intelligence. Information and insights are derived from geospatial data identifying trends and relationships that result in actionable information. GIS can provide accurate, up-to-date mapping of all infrastructure, real-time asset management, and regulatory compliance. The GIS section supports the Houston Water service line by providing internal geospatial services and managing the GIS data for the water distribution and wastewater collection systems. The team provides internal support to maintain the water and wastewater database from construction drawings, as-builts, field verification, reports, disinfection logs, repairs, CCTV updates, and many other sources to continuously enrich the information and spatially validate the data.

Modernization:
GIS technology allows the utility to map and visualize assets, monitor their performance, and make informed decisions about maintenance and upgrades. This data is stored and distributed in the Utility Network Model. Migration to the Utility Network Model was completed in June 2023. This framework provides upgraded support allowing for more robust functionality in mobile applications (e.g. viewing, querying, collecting data, custom mapping, and sharing).

How is the data updated?
Data is created and updated daily using a variety of data sources. Data is shared internally in a series of custom webmaps and services to allow for analysis, review, and feedback to support operational and planning activities."
