Test Holing for Material Verification
To check the water service line material of those who do not self-report, the City of Houston may be digging small test holes outside of your home to reach these pipes underground.
At each test site, City crews or our contractor will dig two holes, approximately 12-inches by 12-inches, on either side of the meter to check the water service line material. It will take about 30 minutes to dig the holes and look at the pipe material. City crews and contractors will not enter your home. You do not need to be home.
Once the water service line material is identified, the contractor will fill in the hole and level it with topsoil. Depending on the ground surface, the City will return to seed, pave, or replace sidewalks as needed to restore the area to its original condition.
After checking the water service line, the contractor will leave a door hanger noting your water service line's material. Please retain for your records. If the line is lead or galvanized steel, you will receive additional information on how to protect yourself and your family from lead in drinking water with home flushing (running water) information.
